Online Reading Curriculum for Older Adults

The THIRD READING AGE project aims to contribute to a measurable and visible:

- increase of accessibility to new communication technologies for older adults and develop the reading culture among citizens aged 60+

- development of competences for educators and library staff working with older adults so they can adapt their teaching to their local context and learner needs

- development of new educational material and resources aimed at activating older adults in the digital space. 

The project will develop senior's competences in:

- basics of using e-books and their possibilities (availability of titles in their national language as well as English, mode of use, user functionality, installation of applications, loaning and

use of titles)

- running and maintaining a creative online blog (design, content maintenance, creative writing)

- designing an e-reader club (virtual discussions, online socialization)

The project will develop senior's competences in:

Main Results of the project:​

  1. Online Reading Curriculum for Older Adults: How to Become a Digital Reader.  Is aimed at facilitating, encouraging and re-thinking reading for older adults using new technologies. The main output objective is to increase accessibility to new communication technologies for older adults and develop the reading culture among citizens aged 60+.

  2. E-reading Community Portal: The Digital Reading Age An open-source online learning portal featuring activities and tools in English and partner languages will be created to support senior learners in piloting the Curriculum. The activities  and tools on the portal will also be available for self-directed learning for any (senior) citizen that is not directly included in the training programme but needs to develop competences of using digital tools, participating in reading clubs, or using national e-reading resources. The portal will also provide a space for senior learners to connect at the national level and form their online (reading) communities.

  3. Training Programme for Adult Educators and Library Staff: Senior Learner Manual.  It will be created in order to support the delivery of the developed results 1 and 2) and to ensure a quality training outcome is achieved.

Partners organised training programmes for senior citizens and multiplier events

Partners from Italy, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Latvia organized several programs for seniors aimed at new technologies, the culture of reading, and critical thinking. A total of 184 senior citizens were actively participating in the face-to-face and online activities that the partners prepared. All the results and outputs were also presented in multiplier events organized in partner countries. We are pleased that we have created and implemented this special program for our elderly patrons and users!

Transnational meetings in Prague and Rijeka

The last two project meetings were held in Prague hosted by GLAFKA and in Rijeka hosted by Dante. During the meetings, we finalized the work on Intellectual outputs, reviewed their content, and prepared for the piloting programme of the Curriculum. All the partners are looking forward to organizing the programs for seniors in their cities and to preparing the Multiplier events after.

training programme

Training programme for adult educators and libaraians was organised in
Faenza, Italy

In June 2022, Italian partner URF organized a joint staff training programme aimed at developing educators' skills in adapting to the needs of senior learners. During the three-day training, the participants addressed issues related to the characteristics and needs of the elderly, the learning environments most suitable for seniors, and the role of reading as social inclusion and active citizenship.

Transnational meeting in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria

After two online Transnational Project Meetining, this one was a hybrid meeting, held via ZOOM platform and live from Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.
Partners from ArtSmart, GLAFKA and URF were present online via Zoom meeting and DANTE, Rijeka City Library and Euni Partners (hosts) were present face-to-face. Partners from ArtSmart shared with the partners the overall progress of the Reading Portal. URF presented progress and vision on the IO3 -Senior Learner Manual. The first part of developing the IO3 is to create the manual that will be the base for piloting the C1 activity.

Partners are working on Online Reading Curriculum for Older Adults: How to Become a Digital Reader

Beginning of the year 2021 was spent on active work on Online Reading Curriculum materials for Face to Face lessons. As of beginning of March all partners have finished drafts of their work and now it is time for coordinators to evaluate them and give necessary feedback!!

We keep moving forward!!

Kick-off meeting of the project “The Third Reading Age”.

Due to the COVID-19 situation the first meeting was conducted through the online platform Zoom on 7th October 2020.

The meeting served as a very strong motivator to start strongly the project. During the meeting partners presented each other, project coordinators did introduce with overall project life cycle as well as in detail presented objectives and tasks of the closest months.
